5 Business Lessons I Learned While Watching Girl Boss

Girl Boss, the Netflix Original Series, has been popping on social media for the past few weeks but to my surprise some people never even heard of Girl Boss.  Sophia Amoruso, the CEO and founder of Nasty Gal and the author of #GirlBoss, shares her story on how she found success while avoiding falling into the trap of societal norms of adulthood. Sophia shared life lessons, business lessons, and boss tips throughout her book in hopes to spark the drive in others.  I appreciate the book because it is definitely needed for young ladies who are starting out in their entrepreneurial journey and might just need a slap on the butt to get them going.  The book was very much necessary because you can highlight and take notes; however, the tv show was pretty dope. I binged watched Girl Boss for two Sundays and I was literally glued to my tv. I absolutely loved the show because people got a chance to see how hard she worked and the extra crap she had to go through in order to gain success.  Many people think success comes easy but it doesn’t. It takes a lot of planning, strategy, late nights and early mornings, and three handfuls of failure in order to get it right.  Here are five major business lessons that I pulled from the tv series that can truly help you grow your business.

  1. Have your own website. Sophia grew her business on eBay which had major success however, Sophia took a lost when eBay shut her down.  As business owners we shy away from doing things we don’t know how to do, we shy away from spending money, and we shy away from doing things that are necessary.  Sophia was banned from eBay and was no longer able to run her store, no store equals no money.  If you didn’t think you  needed a website you might want to reconsider. If you are growing your business on sites that you do not own you should always be pointing your followers, clients, and supporters to your website. Squarespace or Wordpress would not be able to ban you from your site because you are paying for it.  So be sure to keep that in mind while you are growing your business.

  2. Grow your email list. Luckily Sophia had the email addresses from her eBay clients because she was able to send out a massive email informing her clients about her website launch.  If Sophia did not have email addresses she would have been disconnected from her clients and would have had to start Nasty Gal completely over.  After reaching success and having it completely wiped clean can be heart breaking and very discouraging.  So as you grow your business be sure to collect emails from your clients by using an email server such as mailchimp, leadpages, ontraport, etc.

  3. Be strong. It seems like when you have life all figured out all hell breaks loose.  I’m not going to lie I was pretty pissed off when Sophia caught her boyfriend cheating on her.   Things will be going smooth but when all hell break loose you have to be mentally and emotionally prepared to handle it or else it will break you and keep you away from happiness and success.  As you grow your business be sure to grow some thick skin, get your pink boxing gloves ready, and be prepared for the fight.

  4. Appreciate the people that help you.  You can’t grow your business on your own. You are going to need a team of people to help you get to the top.  Beyonce had her mom, dad, and 10year manager Lee Anne Callahan-Lango; Tish and Snooky had each other; Sophia had her best friend Anne, who styled the makeup and helped run the business side of Nasty Gal.  Sophia thought she could run the business on her own but she quickly learned that the one person who was keeping her afloat was the same person who she was neglecting.  Your business can come tumbling down if you don’t have a team in place that will go hard for you but at the end of the day you have to go hard for them as well.

  5. Know how to speak to people.  Sophia had a bad habit of speaking to people any kind of way. She had that IDGAF attitude which can work with some people but not all.  If you have a strong personality you have to know when to turn it on and turn if off.  Everyone doesn’t respond well to people who say what they please; so when you’re in the real world trying to build relationships you need to know when to go to zero to a hunnit and everything in between.

Sophia Amoruso is a fireball who powered her way to the top while being “rebellious and broke.” Sophia is now the owner of Nasty Gal and the owner of the GirlBoss brand which consist of her book, podcast, blog, and now a Netflix series.  Both her book and the tv series offers a ton of business lessons for the future Girl Bosses around the world. Be sure to check out the GRIND STORE to get your copy of the book #GirlBoss and after that be sure to watch the tv series on Netflix.
